DOCUMENTING FOR DOLLARS:  SUCCESSFUL REIMBURSEMENT THROUGH ATTENTION TO DETAIL

 

 

 

COURSE OVERVIEW

 

This exciting, practical workshop provides strategies for evaluating and modifying current documentation practices to meet the demands of the changing healthcare environment. In response to greater scrutiny of the medical record, this workshop provides the healthcare worker with an understanding of the legal, reimbursement and productivity issues related to documentation. The workshop addresses current mechanisms of reimbursement for rehab services, reviews the relationship between documentation and productivity and provides a guideline for documentation that stands up to review. Participants are challenged to rethink current practices in documentation related to productivity and reimbursement and to explore ways to improve.

 

 

 

OBJECTIVES

 

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the regulatory, accreditation and legal issues related to documentation.

  • Define the relationships between documentation, clinical success and reimbursement.

  • Describe the relationship between documentation and productivity and the impact on the cost of care delivery.

  • Define in simple terminology the characteristics of good documentation.

  • Identify essential elements of documentation across treatment settings.

  • Understand the use of documentation tools including paper forms, worksheets and technology in providing appropriate documentation

  • Effective ways to document in support of the 8-23 minute rule in the outpatient Part B environment

  • Documenting minutes for RUGS categories in skilled nursing units

  • Tools for supporting scores recorded on the IRF-PAI in inpatient rehab

  • Use of ICD-9 coding for therapy treatment

  • Inpatient rehab documentation to support the HCFA/CMS 10 rules

  • Medicare Required documentation in all settings

 

 

TARGET AUDIENCE

 

This workshop, presented in a participative format, will provide a valuable learning experience for all physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, occupational therapists, certified occupational therapist assistants and speech and language pathologists.  It is designed to provide practical tools for all therapists and assistants who face the issue of how to balance the demands of treating clients with the paperwork required to achieve reasonable reimbursement.    Immediate and tangible benefits will occur for directors and supervisors, physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, occupational therapists, occupational therapist assistants, speech pathologists, and other healthcare workers experiencing increasing demands for better documentation.

 

SPEAKER

 

Angela M. Phillips, PT is President and CEO of Images, an educational and management consulting service for rehab professionals.  She is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, School of Allied Health Professions and has over 25 years experience as a therapist, manager, hospital administrator and educator including extensive experience as a speaker on quality improvement, customer service, documentation requirements, clinical application for physical agents, preparation for JCAHO and management issues.  Her lecture style combines current research and educational information with examples of realistic and practical clinical applications. Ms. Phillips is author of “The Desktop Consultant: The Rehab Department’s Guide to JCAHO” and has written a number of articles for The Resource, the official publication of the SOA.
